DIY Election monitoring
In the 2011 federal election, there were reports of people outside polling stations asking to see people’s id and voter registration cards, telling them voter registration cards were necessary, or even that they were at the wrong polling station if they didn’t have it, or telling them their id was invalid somehow.
Be vigilant, if you see people doing these things report it to the people inside, and disrupt them and prevent them from turning away people if you have time to stick around until they’re gone.
These tactics were effective last time, particularily with people in lower income neighborhoods because most low income people have had experiences that have left them afraid to argue with anyone who seems official in any way.
There are a variety of other tactics used to reduce voter turnout in certain ridings, usually targeting lower income areas. Many of them are addressed in a recent article in The National Post.
